Mental Health Awareness
May 11, 2023May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and as a functional medicine nurse practitioner, I want to take the time to share some insights about mental health and wellness. Mental health is not only about treating mental illness or psychological symptoms but encompasses a holistic approach to promoting emotional, psychological, and social well- being.
I love functional medicine because it is a patient- centered approach to health care that addresses not only the underlying causes of disease but considers the unique needs of each individual. Practicing functional medicine we examine the whole body, including genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.
The Whole Health Organization estimates that over one billion people worldwide suffer from mental disorders, and this number was expected to increase due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health disorders can be caused by many different factors, including genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and lifestyle habits such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and chronic stress.
Here at Breakthrough Functional Medicine we work to identify the root cause of mental health issues and then develop personalized treatment plans that address the underlying imbalances. For example, if someone comes to see us experiencing anxiety, we may look at their nutrient intake, gut health, and hormonal imbalances as potential contributors. By addressing and focusing on these underlying imbalances, we can often achieve better outcomes than just treating the symptoms with medication.
Mental health is a complex and multifaceted topic, and it requires a multidisciplinary approach to address all aspects. Functional medicine practitioners work collaboratively with other healthcare providers including mental health professionals such as therapists and psychiatrists, to provide a comprehensive approach to treatment.
In addition to seeking professional help, there are also lifestyle habits that can promote mental health and well-being.
These include:
- Regular exercise
- Eating a nutrient- dense, whole foods diet
- Getting adequate sleep
- Practicing stress-reducing activities such as meditation or yoga
- Building supportive relationships and social networks
- Vitamin J! Engaging in activities that bring JOY and purpose to live
As we continue to navigate these past several years, it is essential to prioritize our mental health. Mental health awareness month is an opportunity to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues. By prioritizing mental health and focusing with a holistic approach to treatment, we can work towards better mental health outcomes for ourselves and our communities. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, no not hesitate to reach out for help! There are many resources available, including mental health hotlines, support groups, and healthcare professional trained to help
